Pollution and skin problems
Did you know that environmental pollution can be chemical, physical or even biological?
Pollution is a major problem that affects the environment, but also has a significant impact on public health. Indeed, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), pollution is responsible for around 7 million deaths each year worldwide. But pollution also affects our skin more generally.
Air pollution and skin health
When the skin is attacked by air pollution, it can induce skin dryness, the appearance of enlarged pores, acne, spots, wrinkles, premature aging, as well as atopic dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis.
Pollution and UV: a harmful mixture for the skin
UV rays combined with air pollutants significantly increase the visible signs of skin sensitivity and irritation, and even the risk of developing skin cancer.
The skin is affected by the harmful combination of “pollution + UV” at different levels:
· The barrier function against deleterious external agents is impaired
· The oxidative stress of the skin is increased
· The inflammatory responses of the skin are increased
· The skin may develop hyperpigmentation
· Metalloproteinases are over-activated and induce excessive degradation of skin collagen
· The AhR aryl hydrocarbon receptor is activated and accentuates the toxic effects of pollutants
How to protect the skin from pollution?
Anti-polluting cosmetics
There are many anti-polluting cosmetics, but their modes of action are the same:
● Create a protective film to insulate the skin and limit the adhesion of pollutants
● Cleanse the skin by increasing the elimination of polluting particles
● Incorporate powerful antioxidants and anti-glycation agents
These cosmetics can only protect the outermost layer of the skin, but do not protect it in depth.
A more holistic approach is needed
Products on the market protect the surface layer of the skin, but particles with a diameter of less than 2.5 µm can pass through the tightest pores, and penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin, which most anti-polluting cosmetic ingredients can not reach.
You should know that micro-pollutants have an inside-out effect. After polluting the skin, they reach the systemic venous circulation via the capillaries which irrigate the skin. They can then migrate to the lungs and are reinjected into the arterial blood and returned to the skin. Thus, pollutants attack the skin from the outside and the inside.
This is why a new approach, this time more comprehensive, must be considered.
In-out anti-pollution cosmetic concepts
Cosmetic manufacturers have understood this issue of protecting the skin globally from the harmful effects of air pollution in large cities. The trend of “anti-pollution” cosmetics is booming, brands like Clarins, Bouclier Urbain de Carita, City Block are committed to the anti-pollution concept. The brand Sqintea also offers, as a dietary supplement, an assortment of teas that increase radiance and youthfulness to the skin.
